Approaching my fourth year of teaching at Delta offers me resounding insight into how dynamic and rewarding English study can be, even for the most cynical or disillusioned of students. Many students come into my classes with the assumptions that they can only ‘just scrape’ a band six, or that English is the ‘subjective’ course that will drag down their ATAR; they then leave their HSC year with English results well into the mid-90’s, sometimes state ranks, and an appreciation of how essential it is to be able to read, write and think in ways that are critical and incisive. As a teacher, a year at Delta involves the deconstruction of countless exemplar essays; the frantic address of late-night emails; elucidating vague criteria and rubrics; unfurling more concise and exacting articulations of students’ theses and arguments; and rhapsodizing about the critical significance and value of the literary texts we analyse as part of our engagement with the English (Advanced) course. But underlying the myriad of interactions with my students are the fundamental goals of fostering their critical acumen, and maximising each student’s sense of engagement and achievement in the subject, in both their internal assessments and external examination, in ways that go far beyond their initial expectations and goals.

I’m in charge of the day-to-day running of Delta and I’m the first line of contact for enquiring and enrolled students and parents. As one of our most senior staff members, I am very familiar with the fine details of our tuition services and am always happy to assist enquiring parties in understanding how we can best suit their needs. I am also extremely passionate about English, having originally started working at Delta as an Essay Perfection Program marker in 2015, and I continue to maintain a strong academic role both through direct assistance with marking, progress assessment and course material writing, and also as an academic liaison, particularly for our new students. My grounding in both academic and administrative matters helps Delta to provide an integrated, boutique service that ensures our students can always get the support that they need. In my opinion, is this holistic and individualised approach that fundamentally sets Delta apart from other tuition centres.

I believe the key to success in HSC Advanced English is the ability to be flexible; the ability to construct and deliver a unique, precise and sophisticated argument to an unseen question. In order to attain such dexterity however, a strong bank of knowledge and skill are required. Hence, my style of tuition focuses on imbuing within my students the core methods and proficiencies necessary to tackle the HSC English with flare and prowess. I genuinely invest myself in my student’s success and aim to transfer my thorough knowledge of the Advanced English course through interactive and engaging tuition sessions.

I’ve been with Delta for two and a half years now, and it’s a pleasure to continue sharing my passion for the nuances of language and the craft of writing in such an energetic learning environment. I love the flexibility Delta grants us teachers, where we are encouraged to design our lessons in a way that conveys all the necessary skills and material most effectively and efficiently. To me, that’s through encouraging everyone’s active participation in the learning process. That’s why I strive to create a space wherein every student feels comfortable asking questions and expressing ideas. Every student has a unique perspective and experience of the world that must be nurtured and deepened. Being able to accurately reflect this in our work is not only key to succeeding in English, but wonderfully fulfilling in itself. And it is absolutely possible to fulfil the expectations set out by the BOSTES in a way that satisfies our own personal standards and values.

Hi, my name is Jessica and I currently work as a 1-on-1 tutor and EPP marker at Delta Specialist Education. During my time at Delta, I have seen many students improve dramatically in their English results. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing not only an improvement in marks, but to see students’ diligence, ambition, and confidence flourish. The continuous development of these skills will not only equip you for success during the HSC, but will assist you during your tertiary studies and beyond. I understand that no one student is exactly the same – this is why I tailor my essay feedback and 1-on-1 lessons to suit your needs and ultimately, to help you get the marks that you deserve.

I am passionate about literature and enjoy helping students get the most out of their English studies. It doesn’t matter to me whether my students love or dislike English- if they want to do well, I will work with them to achieve their goals. I believe practice makes perfect, and good planning techniques can help make a huge or confusing task seem manageable. It is always a pleasure to watch students grow in confidence as they come to understand what the HSC English course requires from them. Students who plan well, work hard and are receptive to feedback will always improve, and it is a great privilege to facilitate this process.
